Austin is no stranger to amazing modern architecture and, in case you missed it, the 2017 Austin Modern Home Tour was once again the great success we’d come to expect. Thanks to the support received from some incredible partners, our loyal legion of tour fans had the opportunity to view a selection of 13 stunning modern homes. On this occasion, we shine the spotlight on Studio Momentum‘s modern gem: 1705 Collier.
Making the Most of the Site: The owners wished to live close to their parents, so when the existing lot next door became available they made sure to grab it quickly. The existing house was recycled, and a new 2,800sf house was constructed, nestled in between heritage trees. Lead architect Travis Young from Studio Momentum explains: “The site had huge constraints with the existing heritage trees, plus a very narrow lot.” These were overcome brilliantly, however, as the house opens up to the tree shaded yard, and the amazing canopy is enjoyed through second-floor balconies and outdoor covered deck areas.
The architect-led construction company focused on creating a unique, idiosyncratic home nested to its site, deeply connected to the owner’s lifestyle. “This project took the beautiful existing trees as inspiration, as well as the client’s eclectic design aesthetic, to create a one-of-a-kind home that not only conforms to their lifestyle but also fills the home with positive energy flow and connectivity between indoor and outdoor spaces,” Young added.
Stylish and Modern Doors: When it came to featuring this beautiful home on the tour, our season partner Marvin Windows and Doors was proud to be a part of it. While discussing the home with our editors, we uncovered Studio Momentum‘s excellent choice of using Marvin family products for this cool dwelling.
“Marvin doors were chosen for this project, firstly due to their outstanding thermal performance. They were also chosen due to their durability and security, ease of installation, and integrated adjustment hinges which allowed us to finely tune their operation,” Young added. Of course, their sleek aesthetics made them a shoo-in for the design team.
Get the look: A selection of Marvin Ultimate Swinging French Doors can be found throughout the home in several finishes. We love the simple lines and large glass panes, seamlessly connecting the outside with the uber-cool interiors (FIND WHERE TO BUY).
High Style Meets Efficiency: The firm‘s vision was evident in this project: to translate the owner’s vision into a functional and efficient reality that respects the Central Texas climate while making sure to provide beautiful daylighting and special details. You see, aside from its handsome looks, the house is also incredibly efficient. The primary feature of the house is the quality of natural daylighting. In fact, the main house has such high-quality daylight, that no interior lights are needed for most of the day.
It’s a 5-star rated home with Austin Energy Green Building program, and has ultra-high efficiency HVAC, thermal envelope, and lighting, plus utilizes a reclaimed wood floor and sculptural steel details throughout. Meanwhile, the interior is decked with low or zero VOC finishes, all formaldehyde free. Natural ventilation is provided through an operable high window for thermal stack effect, and Young is also currently awaiting the installation of a rainwater collection system for irrigation. Two roofs are designated for this.
