Sunset, in partnership with Modern Home Tours, will also host its first-ever Home & Garden Tour August 16, giving LA design lovers more ways to experience the best in interior and garden design. Located throughout the coastal neighborhoods of Los Angeles, this Saturday tour includes the Sunset Idea House and five distinctive properties selected by Modern Home Tours and Sunset’s home and garden experts. Tickets, which cost $60 and includes a wine and cheese reception and meet-and-greet with DISC Interiors at the Idea House.

Manhattan Beach, CA
Our 2014 LA Idea House in Manhattan Beach, our first in Los Angeles, is a 4,500-square-foot, 4-bedroom/5.5-bathroom home located just seven miles from LAX and one-and-a-half miles from the beach. Designed by DISC Interiors, this ultimate modern beach house exemplifies the calmness, tranquility, and warmth of the Pacific Ocean and California coastline. The home will be published in the November issue of Sunset.
Venice, CA
The only building in Southern California made entirely of shipping containers, this mixed-use building in the heart of Venice Beach is truly a one-of-a-kind property. Architect Peter DeMaria used 14 containers to construct the building, called Green on Main by owners Paul Keister & Hollie Stenson because of it’s vibrant, unique artistic addition to the Venice Beach art and architecture culture. The ground floor unit is an office space, appropriately housing a local, commercial design firm called Verdego. The middle unit, a 2 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath has a wraparound terrace. The top floor deluxe suite is a huge, light-filled 1 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath with a wrap around windows with mountain and city views, awesome gourmet kitchen and a rooftop deck. Green on Main is 2 blocks from the beach and 2 blocks from the trendy Abbott Kinney street.

This home was inspired by a myriad of influences; places visited, childhood memories, hour long dialogues between the owner/architect and his wife about one’s desires and longings. Add to this the idiosyncrasies and daily life of our families. The design, components, materials, and systems which make up this home have been selected for their elegant simplicity and endurance.
This home is currently participating with the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED certification.

The client sought to fulfill her desire to build ‘home’. Therefore a typology of familiarity was introduced to provoke an inner childhood yearning and recollection of what is “HOME” … a traditional pitched roof, a viewing window to the street, and a chimney.
This home monopolized on the beautifully warm southern California climate, inviting light in while maintaining privacy and security. The single-family home is carefully designed to overcome the constraints of a narrow lot. It is designed to be holistic in a humble way, maintaining methods of passive sustainability and turning away from prescriptive measures.
SITE: As a new construction infill project in a densely populated residential area of Los Angeles, the Coconut House is built on a sub-standard lot (25’x100’).
APPROACH: This typology evolves to find a volumetric expression both literal and metamorphic: a dark, protective shell and a luminous interior courtyard. Subtracting volumes from the building mass allows light, air, and nature to penetrate deeply into the living space, while allowing the
home to spatially extend beyond its moderate volume. These deliberate openings blur the boundary of the narrow lot, yet shield it from exposure to the busy street and neighbors who are an arms-reach away.
Hues of white illuminate the inner core of the dwelling, flirting with light
coming through the skylight and the louvers of the courtyard. The interior reflects the infinite change of light and shadow as it evolves throughout the day, while a sense of privacy embraces the dwelling.
The facade of dark fiber panels with natural wood veneer emulates the
tough shell of a “COCONUT”, which plays a role of security in a physical
and psychological manner.
MAINTENANCE: This maintenance-free facade eliminates the use of
petroleum products, such as paints and sealers, for many years. Further
sustainable features are applied throughout, such as: passive solar
energy, active cross ventilation, recycled cement/wood particle board
fencing, and ecoresin panels, among others. Landscaping is drought
tolerant and free of fertilizer and pesticides.
The house was awarded AIA National housing award in 2006.
