Showcasing Amazing Examples of Modern Architecture Today!
Presented by The Mercer Group
Located in the heart of Kensington Heights, this 1927 Historic Spanish has been completely reimagined while preserving its timeless character. Taken down to the studs, the home has been thoughtfully rebuilt with modern systems and finishes, yet still showcases authentic details including hammered wood beams with hand-painted stencil designs, graceful archways, and the architectural charm that defines the era. Light-filled living spaces flow seamlessly, offering both comfort and elegance for everyday living and entertaining. The kitchen and baths have been updated with high-quality materials that complement the home’s historic integrity. Every detail has been carefully considered to create a perfect balance between old-world craftsmanship and today’s lifestyle. Outside, the private backyard provides a peaceful retreat with western views that capture San Diego’s golden sunsets.

Steps away from North Park’s Farmers Market and a block from 30th, this 1913 home was fully transformed for Sid Marcos—a filmmaker, disability advocate, and design enthusiast.
The modern residence blends utility with grace, featuring Alaskan yellow cedar siding and a sharp standing seam metal roof. Its main axis is vaulted and connects indoors and outdoors, opening onto a 270° wraparound deck. Every aspect was thoughtfully designed to create a flexible, intuitive lifestyle, starting with Sid’s needs as a wheelchair user. Innovations include a driveway to the side door and smooth Senso flooring for tranquil beauty.
About 1,044 square feet was reimagined, plus a 100 SF addition to increase comfort. Shoji-inspired polycarbonate panels, skylights, and expansive Western Window Systems doors flood the space with light. Native, drought-tolerant plants attract butterflies and birds, embodying a new approach to design-forward, indoor-outdoor living.

This cozy bay view home with vaulted wood ceilings was the perfect space for this elegant kitchen design. The project began by removing the interior wall and adding more windows on the Bayside wall to really open up the space and capture views of SD Bay and bridge below Next, teak cabinets were installed and fitted to the ceiling slope. Quartzite countertops with matching full height backsplash top off the matching base cabinets. The ceiling beams were then veneered with teak to match the cabinets. An epoxy floor rounds up the project and adds to it’s signature look

This remodel transforms a dated midcentury house into a playful modern retreat inspired by Polynesian design. The concept centers on a “Sand, Sea & Sun” palette: Sand provides a grounding base of warm woods and natural tones, Sea introduces deep blues and aquatic patterns, and Sun infuses the home with vibrant oranges and sunset reds. The primary suite, dubbed the Bali Hai Room in homage to San Diego’s iconic hotel, is crowned with cedar-clad vaulted ceilings and expansive windows, creating a serene, treehouse-like escape. Bathrooms embrace the palette most boldly—sunset-hued tile in the primary bath, ocean blues in the guest—while a sleek modern kitchen anchors the living space with deep blue cabinetry and crisp geometry. A custom steel entry gate, sculptural fireplace wall, and careful attention to indoor-outdoor flow complete the transformation, creating a home that honors its roots while reimagining them through a distinctly Polynesian-modern lens.

Henry H. Hester, during a forty-year career, produced a significant body of extraordinary design accomplishments which were honored by AIA design awards on both the national and local levels. Mr. Hester had significant influence in introducing modernism to the San Diego region. His designs were known for their simplicity, clean lines, and unwavering attention to detail. His work is as crisp and timely today as it was at the time of its construction.
The house was originally built for the Solomon Family in 1964. The particular site chosen for this home had a stunning view to the ocean. Mr. Hester oriented the house to capture the views of the Coronado Islands and Point Loma (the view of the Coronado Bridge and the Downtown Skyline would come years later). The topography of the site, with its unforgiving granite boulders, led to the unique design of the front pool courtyard and the elevated master bedroom above the entryway.
The current owners are only the third occupants of this Hester House. In the 90’s, the prior owners did a significant remodel that neglected to conserve the Mid Century Modern elements that are having a renaissance today. The current owners set out to bring back some of the original MCM feel while still keeping the house modern and open for today’s lifestyle.
Originally built with a tennis court that included 20 foot street style lights and an 18 foot chain-link fence surrounding it, the current owners built a new building that contains a large garage with 2 car lifts and a “bicycle garage” facing the street. On the back of the garage is a gym/party room. The back half of the tennis court was preserved for a pickleball court.
