The clients came to us with long-nurtured dreams for the forever home that would support their active lives in a walkable community, well into retirement.
This 4,000 square foot 2-story residence shelters and shades a large central courtyard that is accessible from a large screened outdoor living room, a second-floor terrace, and walls of glass that slide open on the first floor. The residence is in scale with the neighborhood from the street while being drama-filled and expansive on the interior. Living spaces at the first floor are terraced across slight level changes marked by white-oak thresholds that define spaces and allow for increasingly dramatic ceiling heights.

This 4,188 square foot new construction home was designed by the homeowner herself, Karen Black of Karen Black Interiors. Karen is a native Houstonian and Interior Designer and designed the layout with the help of Chris Wyrick of Wyrick Residential Design. Given that lot sizes in this area are on the smaller side, every square inch of the site was utilized in the design. The kitchen opens onto an oversized veranda via a wall of sliding glass doors, which allows natural light to flood the space and enhances the home’s overall sense of openness and connectivity. High ceilings run throughout the home, creating a sense of expanse. Natural limestone floors add an old-world feel, providing contrast with the more modern elements of the design.
Stained cabinetry, custom drapery, and pops of color layered on top of the otherwise neutral color palette add warmth to the space. A custom un-lacquered brass bar adorns the kitchen and creates a focal point for entertaining. The study features paneled walls and custom wood doors. The primary bathroom was designed to be a luxurious retreat for the homeowners and boasts an MTI air jetted tub, oversized shower with steam unit, in-ceiling wireless speakers, dimmable lighting, and motorized shades. This home harmonizes classic elements with contemporary touches, resulting in a timeless yet modern aesthetic.

From the homeowner: When building our home in the Heights, we set out to defy convention, stepping away from the typical styles of new construction in the area. As lifelong admirers of mid-century modern design, we envisioned a home that pays homage to this timeless architectural era while introducing modern elements that reflect our personal aesthetic.
Throughout the two-year build, completed in August 2024, we wove MCM-inspired details into the design—from rain chains and CMU block accents to a terracotta-tiled shower. At the same time, we added contemporary touches, like thoughtfully curated wallpaper, to bridge the classic and the modern.
The home’s most striking feature, however, lies just beyond its walls: the towering 150-year-old live oaks that surround the property. These majestic trees shaped the home’s orientation, inspired its woodsy, Pacific Northwest-esque color palette, and grounded the design in nature—a harmonious dialogue between architecture and its environment.

Designed for a family of four, efficiency is one of the key elements to the overall planning of this house situated on a tight urban lot. Marked by a Scandinavian influence, the minimal design reflects a refined level of spare elegance including light colored finishes, simple forms, and open-plan spaces. A covered patio on the second level with floor-to-ceiling glass located at the front of the house serves as the front porch and like a lantern, glows at night.

The Madan Residence, completed in 2024, is a modern single-family home located in the Houston area, designed with both practicality and sustainability in mind.
Spanning 3,503 square feet, the home features three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, and is situated in a flood-prone zone, which led to an elevated design with the first level raised 11 feet above ground. This level houses parking, utility areas, and additional storage, keeping the main living spaces safe and dry.
The second level is dedicated to open, spacious communal living areas, perfect for family interaction and entertaining. The third level accommodates the private quarters, ensuring comfort and privacy for the family. The home is constructed using Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) blocks for structural durability and energy efficiency, making it resilient to the humid Houston climate. Hardie siding is used on the exterior, ensuring the home can withstand potential flooding and severe weather conditions.
Outdoor spaces are a key feature of the design, with versatile areas that can be transformed into seating, gardens, or entertainment zones. These spaces extend the home’s usable area and support a dynamic, outdoor lifestyle.
Overall, the Madan Residence combines innovative flood-resistant design, sustainable material choices, and flexible spaces, creating a functional and comfortable home tailored to the needs of a modern family.
