The clients came to us with long-nurtured dreams for the forever home that would support their active lives in a walkable community, well into retirement.

This 4,000 square foot 2-story residence shelters and shades a large central courtyard that is accessible from a large screened outdoor living room, a second-floor terrace, and walls of glass that slide open on the first floor. The residence is in scale with the neighborhood from the street while being drama-filled and expansive on the interior. Living spaces at the first floor are terraced across slight level changes marked by white-oak thresholds that define spaces and allow for increasingly dramatic ceiling heights.

Designed for a family of four, efficiency is one of the key elements to the overall planning of this house situated on a tight urban lot. Marked by a Scandinavian influence, the minimal design reflects a refined level of spare elegance including light colored finishes, simple forms, and open-plan spaces. A covered patio on the second level with floor-to-ceiling glass located at the front of the house serves as the front porch and like a lantern, glows at night.

CEA + Loveless Design Build

From the homeowner: When building our home in the Heights, we set out to defy convention, stepping away from the typical styles of new construction in the area. As lifelong admirers of mid-century modern design, we envisioned a home that pays homage to this timeless architectural era while introducing modern elements that reflect our personal aesthetic.

Throughout the two-year build, completed in August 2024, we wove MCM-inspired details into the design—from rain chains and CMU block accents to a terracotta-tiled shower. At the same time, we added contemporary touches, like thoughtfully curated wallpaper, to bridge the classic and the modern.

The home’s most striking feature, however, lies just beyond its walls: the towering 150-year-old live oaks that surround the property. These majestic trees shaped the home’s orientation, inspired its woodsy, Pacific Northwest-esque color palette, and grounded the design in nature—a harmonious dialogue between architecture and its environment.

Sheffield House Design

This 1920 Queen Anne Victorian was transformed by a preservation minded couple. The home is located in a designated historic neighborhood which meant strict adherence to standards while converting a neglected structure to a modern home for 3 generations of family members. A guest house and 2nd floor (not open on Tour day) serve as space for mother-in-law and teenaged grandchild.

The owner’s primary focus was the kitchen which serves as heart of the home. The wife’s love of bold color matches the geologist husband’s selection of natural stone countertops to create an unlikely harmonious mix. A built-in window seat and large island provide extra seating for family gatherings. The foyer features the original lath board ceiling stripped of plaster and paint to reveal the natural wood.

Notice the new staircase featuring a custom curved metal baluster and hand rail overlooking the voluminous dining space. Hand crafted items collected during the couple’s overseas assignments highlight Asian art and textiles.

Hollenbeck Architects & Taashki Studio Interior Design

In designing her own home, Natasha Shamdasani of Taashki Studio wanted one that would feel like their favorite Asian resorts in Asia. Hollenbeck Architects didn’t disappoint.

Inspired by modern Thai architecture, their ‘beach house on the bayou’ features wood slats and a split skillion roof. The flood-resistant, elevated design (11’ above ground) uses sustainable materials – Concrete Masonry Units (CMU) blocks and Hardie siding – for structural durability, energy efficiency and for severe weather conditions.

The raised design created a Veranda under the house. With the oversized lot, pool, and formidable trees, the backyard is an outdoor oasis. The unconventional interiors separate the entertainment areas from the private quarters, creating private ‘wings’ that mimic how you move through a resort.

Modern details abound: wide windowsills, slab cabinetry, plank floors, large windows, flat ceilings, touch faucet, and a suspended ceiling faucet. Amenities make life easier: motion-activated lighting, dimmers, video doorbell, keyless access.

But a home has no soul without stories. So the designer wove in history and heritage: antique front doors, a custom tile ‘rug’, an 18thC apothecary cabinet island, a salvaged wood, antique brass corbels, unique tile layouts. The curved shower is reminiscent of Phuket and Bali. The walnut shelf is from a previous home. The brass backsplash feels like a favorite whisky bar. From mixed metals to wallpaper, the oversized lighting to the uncommon stones, every design decision is a considered one. It is these stories that turn a modern new construction into the magic of home.

Karen Black Interiors

This 4,188 square foot new construction home was designed by the homeowner herself, Karen Black of Karen Black Interiors. Karen is a native Houstonian and Interior Designer and designed the layout with the help of Chris Wyrick of Wyrick Residential Design. Given that lot sizes in this area are on the smaller side, every square inch of the site was utilized in the design. The kitchen opens onto an oversized veranda via a wall of sliding glass doors, which allows natural light to flood the space and enhances the home’s overall sense of openness and connectivity. High ceilings run throughout the home, creating a sense of expanse. Natural limestone floors add an old-world feel, providing contrast with the more modern elements of the design.

Stained cabinetry, custom drapery, and pops of color layered on top of the otherwise neutral color palette add warmth to the space. A custom un-lacquered brass bar adorns the kitchen and creates a focal point for entertaining. The study features paneled walls and custom wood doors. The primary bathroom was designed to be a luxurious retreat for the homeowners and boasts an MTI air jetted tub, oversized shower with steam unit, in-ceiling wireless speakers, dimmable lighting, and motorized shades. This home harmonizes classic elements with contemporary touches, resulting in a timeless yet modern aesthetic.

LEAM Design Build

From the moment you step inside, this 5,000+ sq. ft. modern home impresses with its sense of space—an unexpected feature given its 8,125 sq. ft. lot. The open-concept design provides clear sightlines, yet the layout unfolds gradually, revealing new spaces as you move through. A striking mix of natural wood, stucco, brick, and siding gives the exterior a distinctive character, while floor-to-ceiling glass doors and expansive windows bring in natural light and connect seamlessly to the patio and pool area. A motorized retractable pergola allows for shade or sun at the touch of a button. With two master suites, an elevator, an outdoor kitchen, and custom millwork throughout, this home blends thoughtful design with modern comfort. The upstairs glass-railed hallway overlooks the main living space, enhancing the openness and architectural flow. Step inside and experience a home designed for both discovery and connection.
