In 2017, The Happy Valley personal residence of Carla and David Rael of modern home design firm Rael, Inc. was a highlight of the Portland Modern Home Tour, and now it’s available for purchase!   We spoke to Carla Rael and broker Patti Jensen to find out more about this amazing modern masterpiece.

MA+DS: If you had to identify one standout feature from your time living in this home, what would it be?

Carla Rael (CR): The upper deck.  At approximately 1000 square feet with sweeping views of the valley, it’s totally private and the perfect place for a family camp out!

MA+DS: Patti – what’s it like living in Happy Valley?

Patti Jensen (PJ): I think living in Happy Valley offers a number of advantages over city living, value and price being number one.  A custom designed home of this size, with the views in Portland would list for considerably more, and I agree – especially with this home, the views are amazing.  You really have to see it to believe it!

MA+DS: The home was owned by business owners – how did this impact the design?

CR: The main entry / reception area right when you walk in is just off the area we designed for a home office.  It’s absolutely perfect for someone who wants to occasionally (or frequently!) work from home and welcome clients while not having to give access to the rest of the house.

MA+DS: This home really embraces “modern.”  How does Portland embrace the modern movement, and, as a broker, where do you see the modern movement going in Portland?

PJ: Modern homes have found their way into the heart of Portlanders in the past few years due to the clean lines and often environmentally friendly upgrades that go into a home that emphasizes modern architecture. Interior design trends have swung largely away from the craftsman look that was so popular in the 2000’s and now has embraced the mid century modern movement. This particular home is unique because it combines the posh qualities of a modern home with a suburban neighborhood that has great schools. The sellers have amazing style, I like to call it a more urban eclectic take on Schoolhouse Electric.

MA+DS: Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite room – the kitchen! What’s special about the kitchen at Moon Dust Ct.?

CR:  I love that the side patio just off of the kitchen is private & has a fire pit – there is a pass through window from the Butler’s pantry which makes serving party goers extremely easy.  And the butler’s pantry (or second kitchen) is just off of the main kitchen & has a refrigerator, sink & dishwasher.  It’s a perfect prep kitchen!

MA+DS: Thanks to both of you – good luck with the sale of this amazing home! Readers – please check out the full gallery by clicking here.
