URBANbuild of Tulane School of Architecture

We’re very excited that our upcoming tour in New Orleans will feature a home designed by URBANbuild of Tulane School of Architecture. URBANbuild is a design|build program in which teams of students take on the design and construction of prototypical homes for New Orleans’ neighborhoods.  The program is an educational collaboration of individuals, organizations, and businesses committed to revitalizing New Orleans’ rich cultural and architectural heritage.

Over the past 5 years, URBANbuild has realized a body of work in collaboration with a number of local community partners, vendors and material suppliers. 5 of the their 6 completed structures were in collaboration with Neighborhood Housing Services of New Orleans, Inc. Recently, URBANbuild was invited to collaborate with Brad Pitt’s Make it Right to develop a residential duplex strategy for the devestated 9th Ward neighborhood.

On the New Orleans Modern Home Tour, we’ll be featuring 2036 Seventh St., a home constructed based on the URBANbuild prototype 04. The prototype explores the relationship of public and private spaces in connection to the street scape. With a focus on sustainability, prototype 04 reached LEED Silver certification. The house takes advantage of its corner lot through fenestration and porches, generating an engagement of the house within the neighborhood while simultaneously providing privacy for the homeowner. The polycarbonate screening system creates the opportunity for an adjustable transparency of the facade in relation to desired lighting and visual connection to the street. The house, 1,200 square feet, features 3 bedroom and 2 baths, as well as living room, kitchen, dining area, and private garden.

Below, take a lot at some images of prototype 4 and 2036 Seventh St. in its various stages of construction through URBANbuild! And then, make sure to grab your tickets for this weekend’s tour!
