This accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was built on a lot with an existing house and a grove of giant Texas Pecan trees. When walking from the front unit to the back, you get a sense of stepping into a quiet urban getaway. The towering trees and captivating exterior of the home welcome a sense of rest and repose.
The interior boasts designer finishes with gold tones and washes of color. A waterfall island adds a sleek and modern touch of art to the kitchen while opening the space to the expansive feel of the living room. The loft-like interior space feels airy and is full of natural light with controlled views in all directions. The living room boasts a wall of windows and a sliding glass door that marries the inside and outside living. The outdoor space is as inviting as the indoor, as attention to detail and texture is found in the landscaping and expansive decking creating an outdoor oasis. Both bathrooms have designer tile finishes and user-friendly space design.
An Entry Porch on the alley side is articulated by a folded roof; a covered stoop on the yard side is created by cantilevering the upper floor. The site orientation provides ideal conditions for passive solar strategies. A large south-facing shed room provides space for a large PV array. The goal of the project was to create a detached second residence that had its own private access via an alley and private yard space. This small residence can be sold, as part of a condo regime, or rented.
